Music stars Katy Perry and John Mayer reportedly ended their relationship a long time ago, but the two may be moving into a new form of performing, involving stage musicals.

On Wednesday, a report from The Mary Sue quotes director Rob Reiner who opened up on the idea of making a musical version of the classic hit The Princess Bride. It turns out that he spoke to some musical experts about it as well as Mayer, but it didn't work out.

"I've talked to [Hairspray and Catch Me If You Can's] Mark Shaiman about [a Princess Bride musical]. He said, 'I wouldn't know what to do.' I mean, it's too good a movie. I can't imagine," Reiner said.

"I talked to Randy Newman who also [couldn't do it]," he continued. "[There] was a moment where John Mayer who I thought had a sense of humor and could do some interesting lyrics and then he said he was gonna do it, then he backed out because he said, 'It's too much. I can't do it.'"

Even though Mayer apparently backed out of a musical, it turns out that his ex-girlfriend might find her way into one- as the star.

On Friday, a story from Vulture reported that Amy Heckerling, the director of 90's teen comedy Clueless, is in the early stages of bringing the classic movie to the stage. And according to her, the Birthday singer could be a consideration.

"Katy Perry has expressed interest, and I love her to death," Heckerling said, but also mentioned that the pop star's schedule might cause a conflict.
