NBA player Jason Kidd was arrested for driving while intoxicated. The 2011 NBA champion, who recently signed with the New York Knicks, was arrested after he crashed his SUV into a pole.

The point guard "smelled heavily of an alcoholic beverage; was very unsteady on his feet, and did not know what happened", according to a police report obtained by Newsday.

Police Chief William Wilson Jr. told Newsday that Kidd was charged with driving while intoxicated after he refused a blood test and chemical test. The 6'4", 220-pound Kidd, 39, listed his employer as the New York Knicks and his occupation as "athlete" after being arrested by Southampton Town police, according to the report.

TMZ first reported that Jason Kidd got drunk at a charity event at Club SL East in East Hampton, Long Island early Sunday morning.

Multiple sources told TMZ that he was so "incredibly drunk" he tried to hang from a club light and broke it.

TMZ has obtained exclusive photos of Kidd being carried out of the club as well as his mug shot shortly after his arrest. The photo shows Kidd with a bruise on his right cheek.

Despite being asked by friends at the club not to drive while drunk, Kidd drove alone and crashed his white 2010 Cadillac Escalade into a telephone pole less than an hour later.

He was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. After being released from the hospital, he was transported to the local police station for processing. South Hampton police confirmed the arrest to TMZ.

Local police revealed he was arraigned on a misdemeanor DWI charge in Southampton Town Justice Court and later released on his own recognizance.

Kidd's attorney, Ed Burke Jr., told TMZ, "Jason was involved in a single vehicle accident on his way back home from a charity function last night. He suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from a local hospital. Jason has pleaded not guilty to a DWI charge and awaits further court proceedings."

Prior to the arrest, Kidd Tweeted a photo of himself with Hollywood film producer George Lucas at the event.

Jason Kidd signed a three-year, $9.5 million deal with the New York Knicks on July 5.

Kidd won an NBA championship with the Dallas Mavericks in 2011 and two Olympic gold medals with the US national team in 2000 and 2008.
