Homeland is on track with its plan to go on without Brody (Damian Lewis) in Season 4, though the original plan had this occurring two season previous.

Brody was hanged in Iran in the Season 3 finale of Homeland, and while the show is moving on without him, this was actually supposed to happen much earlier in the series. Homeland executive producer Alex Gansa spoke with critics at the Television Critics Association press tour Friday and admitted that Brody was supposed to die a long time ago, and Carrie (Claire Danes) was intended to move on.

"When we conceived the show," he explained, "we planned Brody for one season, and then we would send Carrie back overseas to do the job she was trained to do."

The relationship between Carrie and Brody wound up being a compelling one for the show's fans, so Brody was kept around for all of Season 2 and, most recently, sporadically through Season 3. Despite fans saying that Season 3 was significantly weaker than the first two seasons, Gansa thought that the end of the season featured some of the best episodes of the series.

"Our last six to seven episodes were among the best on television," he said. "The last two were two of the best we've ever done."

Meanwhile, fellow producer Meredith Stiehm was also at the TCA press tour and revealed that Carrie would not be taking care of her and Brody's baby in the new season. Stiehm admitted that while Carrie is "stable" now, she wouldn't be able to take care of a child in a country that is "too dangerous for dependents."

Homeland Season 4 premieres Sunday, Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime.
