"Alex and Joe are in an interesting place - though I don't know if I would talk about them in terms of their relationship just yet, just because thats not really the focus at the moment," showrunner Shonda Rhimes told TVLine.com.

Instead, Alex has a lot of personal questions he has to deal with.

Is A New Actor Coming To Grey's Anatomy This Fall?

Rhimes explained, "Cristina has left him these shares and the seat on the board, and what that means for him is complex. Does he want that? Is that what he's looking for? Did he want the money grab that [private practice] provided him, or does he want to be the guy who has a seat on the board? It's a big deal for him to figure out what he wants."

Alex and Jo won't be the only doctors experiencing some romantic troubles. On the season 10 finale of Grey's Anatomy, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) didn't go with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) to D.C. for his new job. Rhimes previously revealed that this transition will affect their relationship in a big way.

"It is something huge. I'm not going to say it causes a huge fight, but we start them out exactly where we left them in the middle of that dilemma. It may cause a huge fight, but I'm not going to say that," she told TVGuide.com.

Season 11 of Grey's Anatomy premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on ABC.
