"X-Factor USA" judge Demi Lovato discussed why she used to cut herself.

Lovato, 19 is on the cover of SELF magazine's August 2012 isue and for the interview she addresses her self-harm issues for the very first time.

"There were times I felt so anxious, almost like I was crawling out of my skin - that if I didn't do something physical to match the way I felt inside, I would explode," the X Factor judge, 19, says in Self magazine's August issue, according to People.

"I cut myself to take my mind off that. I just didn't care what happened. I had no fear," she added.

"I make time for myself and meditate," she says. "I've spent the past two years getting over an eating disorder and issues like self-harming and bipolar disorder. I have to work on this stuff every day. I'm reminded of that whenever I eat or feel down."

She shared that one of the biggest changes she made that helps her have a healthier lifestyle is cutting out the use of her cell phone.

"I haven't used my cell in three months!" says Lovato. "Subconsciously, it was a crutch. When a room gets quiet, what do you do? Grab your phone! Now I can sit and have conversations with people."

Lovato made headlines in 2010 when she checked into a medical center to get professional help. "She fought through eating disorders and has struggled with cutting. [She] is taking control by getting help," a source told People.

"She definitely had body-image issues. She was always conscious of her weight," the source added.

According to another insider, Lovato "doesn't have that same kind of love for life that she at one point had."

Lovato is known for her appearance in the "Camp Rock" movies, and as the lead character Sonny Munroe in the Disney sitcom "Sonny with a Chance". The former Disney star will be a judge on the second season of "X-Factor: USA" with co-judges Britney Spears, Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid.
