While Benedict Cumberbatch has been ruling the Doctor Strange news so far in Comic-Con, it looks like another name, and one that is way more obscure, could be taking the lead role in the upcoming Marvel picture.

'Doctor Strange' News: Benedict Cumberbatch Downplays Rumors Of Taking Lead Role

The Wrap is reporting that Her and the upcoming Inherent Vice star Joaquin Phoenix is in talks to play the lead character in Marvel's Doctor Strange. The film is directed by Deliver Me From Evil's Scott Derrickson.

While representatives from Marvel and Phoenix didn't comment, The Wrap's Jeff Sneider said Phoenix is in consideration and has had discussions.

'Doctor Strange' Rumors: Will Marvel Unveil The Title Star At Comic-Con?

Phoenix is not the first name that many would of thought to be in contention for a role in a superhero movie. The actor entertained the idea of being in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but elected to pass.

His most recent work has been acclaimed films like Her, The Master, and The Immigrant, but making a leap into blockbuster films could be big for the actor. The Wrap added that Phoenix is one of the last actors in Hollywood who would be willing to lock himself into a potential long-term deal, but it's possible that he's not being asked to sign the same staggering multi-picture contract that other actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have.

Making the move to Marvel has paid off for most of the big actors involved as leading men Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Hemsworth have turned into two of the highest paid actors in Hollywood through their roles in Iron Man and Thor.

Doctor Strange is set for a 2016 release date.
