Penny Dreadful's Josh Hartnett (Pearl Harbor, 30 Days Of Night) made an appearance at Comic-Con in San Diego over the weekend and even though Season 1 just ended, the Showtime star is ready to get started on episodes for next year.

Hartnett caused a lot of audience speculation with h's turn as the mysterious Ethan Chandler, and the THIS actor spoke a little with Happy Cool (featured below) about his hopes for the second season.

"He's [Chandler] a very complex character…" explained Hartnett, "We wanted to tease him out in a way that you could only do on TV…next season will be much more about what his character has to offer."

The actor also gave a great deal of credit to series creator John Logan, who also wrote the show. Hartnett called Logan "endlessly engaging" and enjoys working with him. "It's always surprising to pick up John's script," said Hartnett, "He's looking to surprise the audience."

The actors received the season scripts this coming week and Hartnett assured fans that that the cast will pretty much be getting most of the season when those scripts come in.

"I had kind of a free year…" he joked of his time during the show's first season, noting that his character didn't have much to do in early episodes, "So next season hopefully I'll be on set a little bit more."

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
