Now that Marvel has set a schedule for their release dates going up to the year 2019, it is time to begin the speculation as to where each movie will land. But will the next Thor installment land sooner or will a return to Asgard not happen until 2018?

Rumored Plot May Lead To The Death Of Main Characters In 'Thor 3'

Thor has been a relative success for Marvel. The sequel Thor: The Dark World was released last November to strong numbers and a lukewarm critical reaction. Game of Thrones director Alan Taylor was signed on to helm and his history with fantasy violence and drama came in handy with the intergalactic fighting between Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Malekith (Christopher Eccleston).

Thor appears next in next summer's Avengers: Age of Ultron but beyond then, it is unsure when the God of Thunder will be returning to the movie screen in a solo venture. After Avengers, there is Ant-Man in July followed by Captain America 3 the following summer. Past that, it is still undetermined with only a July 28, 2017 date set for Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Chris Hemsworth Teases Armageddon Storyline With Big Villain

Marvel has set a screenwriter and director for Doctor Strange so a 2016 release date is most likely set for the origin story for the mystic superhero and a return of the Avengers team is sure to have to happen in the future due to where the story goes as well as the massive box office success the movie will surely be.

Den of Geek speculated on the Marvel release schedule and pegged Thor 3 for a May 5, 2017 release date. This puts it following the 2016 slate of Captain America 3 and Doctor Strange, but places it ahead of the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel. This makes sense because Marvel has gone on the record and said they want to switch between sequel and original film going forward.

A 2017 release is possible, but Thor 3 is also more of a question mark right now than Guardians 2. The latter has already set James Gunn to return to direct and write the movie, while Thor 3 has still yet to replace Alan Taylor, if he does decide to not return at director.

The money is in Taylor leaving after he decided to move and take over the re-boot of the Terminator franchise and wasn't necessarily always a fan of working on Thor.

As of right now, it seems like 2017 may be a little too early for Thor 3, and a release date of 2018 seems more plausible for the God of Thunder based on the behind the scenes work that needs to take place.
