It seems like Channing Tatum is pretty set on playing a superhero, namely Gambit in an X-Men movie, but according to one of the main writers in the franchise, fans may not be seeing Tatum as Gambit anytime soon.

Could An 'X-Men: The Last Stand' Mutant Return For 'Apocalypse?'

Speaking with Latino Review, writer Simon Kinberg was noncommittal about Tatum joining the franchise as Gambit, and was unsure if a Gambit movie or cameo would happen at all to this point.

"I genuinely don't know the answer to that question," Kinberg said. "It's something we are all talking about whether it would be good for Gambit to be in a mainline X-Men movie or he would be in his own standalone movie potentially one day to be able to be in another X-Men movie after his Gambit movie introduces him. I really don't know the answer."

Is One Of The Staple X-Men Slated To Be A Villain In 'X-Men: Apocalypse?'

Tatum spoke with Latino Review in June and seemed to feel like a standalone film would happen as well as a cameo in an upcoming X-Men movie. But according to Kinberg, they are unsure of when they will include Gambit into the storyline.

"I don't think there is a hard and fast rule which way is better. I think both ways have worked and I think actually the real question will be is there a role that is strong and specific enough for Gambit in a mainline X-Men movie whether it be Apocalypse or future X-Men movie that would be the right way to introduce the character," Kinberg said.

"You don't want to stick characters in these movies and manufacture something for them to do."

X-Men: Apocalypse is set for a release date of May 27, 2016.
