Katherine Heigl To Return? Executive Producer Slams Rumors

When the show returns in the fall, Meredith and her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) will deal with his decision to head to D.C. for a new job offer. Meredith, who feels she's been put last, will change her mindset this season.

"The idea that Derek thinks his career is more important than Meredith's is both true for him and frustrating for her. It doesn't make him a bad person because his career is more important than hers right now," showrunner Shonda Rhimes told The Hollywood Reporter. "The idea that she has set back her career to deal with the kids and let him shine is also very frustrating for her as well. She's got a chance to step forward and say, 'I'm not going to do that anymore.'"

Is A New Actor Coming To Grey's Anatomy This Fall?

Aside from her husband's big career move, Meredith also finds herself dealing with the arrival of her half-sister Maggie and losing her best friend Cristina.

"It's really a Meredith-centric season," Rhimes said. "She's got all these things going on. Maybe that's the theme, maybe it's independence. But for me right now, it feels like it's Meredith. I'm feeling her more acutely because she's lost her person."

Season 11 of Grey's Anatomy premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on ABC.
