Hounsou plays villain Korath in the film, which centers around Peter Quill (played by Parks and Recreation actor Chris Pratt) and the formation of a team of anti-heroes which also include Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista), Zoe Saldana as Gamora and Rocket the Raccoon and Groot, voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively.

The film begins with Peter Quill as a young boy in 1988 seeing his dying mother one last time before being abducted by an alien ship. The film then fast-forwards to the future where Korath first encounters Quill in an opening action scene.

Talking about the lengthy time it took to get into character everyday before shooting, Hounsou said, "It was f---ing dreadful. There was five hours of make-up," before adding, "There was a lot of fun on the set, working with this group. At the end of the day it was definitely worth it."

As far as what's next for the franchise, Hounsou says he is very optimistic and is hopeful that audiences will be able to connect with the anti-heroes of the film, which is full of both dark and very humorous scenes.

"It's a very interesting film," Hounsou said. "We all have to give a lot of credit to the director for such an amazing project. Being able to conceptualize those ideas and be able to bring them to life is amazing. I really loved the comedic aspects of it. On set, with hundreds of extras walking around in creature make-up, it felt like being on another planet. But you never know what something will look like when it's finished. It's definitely another world."

He added, "It's an action-packed, space-drive story. A dramatic story. I like the fact that it is very theatrical."

Directed by James Gunn, Guardians of The Galaxy is currently playing in cinemas nationwide. The film also stars Michael Rooker, Lee Pace, John C. Reilly and Glenn Close.
