Gotham is really fleshing out its world, bringing in pretty much every character from the Batman universe save for The Joker, who will show up eventually but is being treated as a secret for now.

Gotham Cast Discuss Fan Expectations

However, nigh every other villainous character has already been cast, and one more can be added to that list. On Friday, TV Line reported that David Zayas will be playing yet another Gotham bad guy.

Zayas will be playing Salvatore Maroni, a small but pivotal character in the traditional Batman mythology. Maroni is a mob boss, and in the world of Gotham he'll be competing with another notable Gotham City crime boss, Falcone, for territory. Maroni was played by Eric Roberts in The Dark Knight, but in that film he didn't have quite the same role as he did in the comics. There, he is known as the mad responsible for disfiguring District Attorney Harvey Dent, thereby paving the way for him to become the villainous Two-Face.

Gotham Showrunner Discusses Hope And Struggle Within The Show

Zayas is probably best known for playing Angel Batista on Dexter, but he has had roles in several other shows and movies. FOX's Gotham is being treated as a "Batman before Batman" focusing on Jim Gordon before he was police commissioner back when he was just a cop on the streets. While it is nice that the show clearly is interested in fleshing out its world, by this point there might be villain overkill. They've already made it known that the likes of The Penguins, Catwoman, and The Riddler will be involved, The Joker aside, so guys like Maroni may end up on the backburner. Viewers will find out when the show debuts on September 22.
