Johns' cause of death is said to have been a blood clot he suffered in his ankle, according to The Hollywood Reporter Saturday. Johns made his mark on reality television when he appeared on FOX's hit singing series American Idol back in 2008. He placed eighth in the competitive show and went on to release his first album, Hold Back My Heart, which featured his hit song Heart on My Sleeve in 2009.

American Idol's Facebook page confirmed the news Saturday in a post that reads, "Michael Johns was an incredible talent and we are deeply saddened by the news of his passing. He was part of our AMERICAN IDOL family and he will be truly missed. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."

Johns's family also released a statement to thank fans for standing by them.

Former American Idol judge Simon Cowell sent his condolences via Twitter Saturday.

He wrote, "I just heard the very sad news that Michael Johns has passed away. A truly great guy. Rest in peace Michael."

In one of his final tweets on July 10, Johns let his followers know he was working on new music.
