Recently, the cast of The CW's The Originals appeared in San Diego for Comic-Con to tease out the upcoming season, assuring fans that the upcoming episodes will take a different though equally compelling direction as Season 1.

Klaus & Hayley Like 'Brother & Sister' For 'The Originals' Upcoming Episodes

Creator and producer Julie Plec revealed the first episode is titled Rebirth after a local New Orleans band of the same name which was featured in the pilot episode of Season 1. Her aim this season has been to create a "warped fairytale component," which has certainly been mirrored in the first preview released during the Comic-Con panel.

"This sins of the past [are] coming to haunt us in the present," explained producer Michael Narducci in his discussion of the highly dysfunctional Mikaelson family, but the trouble won't end there. Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) is attempting to rebuild, which is no easy feat in a town suddenly run by werewolves.

Marcel is trying to "rebuild his vampire community which has been whittled down to him and Josh," noted Davis, which then led into the discussion of how Josh (Steven Krueger), a newly turned vampire who entered halfway through Season 1, has made it this far.

According to Plec, Josh had originally been designed as a likable character to be killed off later in the season for dramatic effect. It is common TV practice to kill off fan favorites to elicit an emotional response, but when Plec turned to her writers she found she had somewhat of a mutiny on her hands.

A laughing Plec explained that her writing team warned her, "if you kill Josh you are the enemy of all things good." As a result, his death was put off and put off to the point in which he has developed as a regular character on the series.

In spite of Krueger's absence at the panel, both producers said that the likable young club kid turned vampire will likely develop a romantic interest in upcoming episodes. So far Josh is the only character confirmed to be getting a new love interest, suggesting that there may be some unfinished business between Marcel and Cami (Leah Pipes) or Elijah (Daniel Gillies) and Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin).

The Originals returns to The CW for a second season Monday, October 6 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
