Even though the Guardians of the Galaxy just hit theaters, there is already murmurs of where the franchise will go in the already planned 2017 sequel. But could the second film be the tie between The Avengers and the Guardians?

'Guardians' Star Poised To Become Marvel's Next Merchandising Monster

In an interview with the Huffington Post published on Monday, Marvel head Kevin Feige talked about the direction they wanted to head with the second Guardians film and that he had been thinking about a sequel for a long time.

"Certainly in the two years that we spent together on this movie, during production or in the hours and hours we spent together in post-production, finishing the film, there can be causal comments that start as a joke or a 'What if?'" Feige said.

"And we file them away, either officially on paper or in our heads, and have them at the ready when we start to officially start to put together the next film."

Director James Gunn spoke separately with the Huffington Post and expanded on what he wanted to do with the sequel and said that he began thinking about it after the first screenplay was done.

"When I first started writing my first draft of the script, which was significantly different from the things that came before it, the first thing that I centered around was the Sony Walkman," Gunn said. "To me, really the heart of the film is the Sony Walkman, because that exemplifies the relationship between Peter Quill and his mother."

But what about that tie-in with the Avengers that has been rumored? MoviePilot broke down the footage from Comic-Con that Marvel showed of Avengers: Age of Ultron and said that it seems like the Hulk may become somewhat of a villain in the film, which could lead to him going to space and meeting the Guardians.

"The rumor is that at the end of The Avengers: Age Of Ultron, The Hulk might save the world by helping to send Ultron to a different dimension via Thor's space bridge," MoviePilot speculated.

"This could shoot the Hulk over to the part of the galaxy where the Guardians of the Galaxy reside, thus making a direct connection between the two teams. The Hulk comes back to Earth with the help of the Guardians of the Galaxy to fight Thanos who is trying to assemble the Infinity Gauntlet."

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is set to open in theaters on July 28, 2017.
