Casting rumors for True Detective's second season on HBO have stretched far and wide, from Jessica Chastain (The Help, Mama) to Jon Hamm (Bridesmaids, Friends With Kids).

'True Detective' Season 2 Casting Rumors

Creator Nic Pizzolatto shot down speculation on the series back in June, claiming that all the rumors were false. Now it's looking like Vince Vaughn (The Internship, Couples Retreat) is in talks for one of the drama's leading roles, suggesting perhaps that Pizzolatto made an effort to go with the least likely actor for the role.

Not only is Vaughn one of the few big names to have been absent from all True Detective discussion over the last four months, he is also the only primarily comedic actor to be considered for the show's second season.

'True Detective' Stars Will Have To Do Their 'Homework'

The decision would not be unprecedented. After all, Matthew McConaughey had done a number of comedies before landing one of the leading roles for the program's first season. Like McConaughey, Vaughn does have a few dramas under his belt, including The Lost World: Jurassic Park in 1997 and more recently the 2007 film Into the Wild.

According to E! on Monday, Vaughn is currently in talks to join the cast, though no paperwork has been signed at this time. Other actors said to be likely candidates for the series are Colin Farrell (In Bruges) and Taylor Kitsch (Lone Survivor), though it is uncertain if these three actors will be competing for the same role.

True Detective returns to HBO for a second season in 2015.
