Despite reports that Charlize Theron and Sean Penn are close to getting engaged and even married, some friends of hers are reportedly telling the actress to take it slow.

The National Enquirer reported on Thursday that Theron's friends are being cautious about Penn. "They're urging her to think twice before finally heading down the aisle with Sean," a source said.

Penn was charged in 1987 with domestic assault after hitting then wife Madonna with a baseball bat and Theron's pals apparently "fear for her safety."

"They want to get married very soon," a source told Us Weekly about the couple in July. "Sean is revitalized with Charlize." The magazine even reported that they're looking into have a child together. Theron has a son Jackson, while Penn has two older children with ex-wife Robin Wright.

"[Charlize] likes guys with more substance. She finds Sean very charming and he makes her laugh," a source close to the Monster actress told People. "She definitely has him wrapped around her finger." The couple has been public since January, but according to Theron they've been friends for around 18 years.

"Sean and I have known each other for 18 years. We were just really good friends. And it's been slow going because you are aware that you could screw that up and lose it," Theron spilled in Vogue. "We had to think about it. But at the end of the day, it was somewhat effortless."

Theron and Penn are both filming a new movie together called The Last Face in South Africa this summer.
