Longmire's Season 3 finale aired on A&E Monday, and it's possible this could be the end of the road for the residents of Absaroka, Wyo.

Walt Seeks Closer As 'Longmire' Heads Towards Season 3 Finale

According to TVLine on Wednesday, the finale saw a nine percent rise in ratings, with 3.7 million viewers tuning in to see how things would end for Sheriff Walt (Robert Taylor). This jump in ratings could be enough to secure the drama a fourth season.

The finale saw quite a bit of action, with Sheriff Walt finally learning the truth about Miller Beck's murder and Branch potentially murdered by his own father after making some unfortunate discoveries about the family business. With so many storylines uncertain by the chose of the episode, it seems the series is banking on being renewed.

This wouldn't be the first time Longmire got picked up late in the game. Last year confirmation for Season 3 didn't arrive until halfway through November, meaning the show has plenty of time before it's considered gone for good.

Whether or not the show is renewed, it seems that author Craig Johnson, who wrote the material on which the series is based, has been pleased with the drama.

In a Johnson County Library interview last week (featured below), he noted that his involvement with the program from the very beginning was unique for an novelist. He was involved in the casting process and got to sit in on audtions, including that of lead actor Robert Taylor. "You could see the wheels turning, you knew something was going on there," explained Johnson of Taylor's performance. "That was one of the exciting parts about it."

Longmire's Season 3 finale aired on A&E Monday, August 4 at 10 p.m.
