Meredith's late mother will appear on the season 11 premiere of Grey's Anatomy via flashbacks. Will all the questions Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) has about her half-sister be answered?

Is A New Actor Coming To Grey's Anatomy This Fall?

Kate Burton, who plays Meredith's mother, Ellis Grey, will reprise her role this fall, TVGuide.com reported on Wednesday.

"It's going to be interesting to see how it plays out," executive producer Shonda Rhimes previously told the website of the situation with Meredith's half-sister. "Because we've all known about it for so long, it's always been layered in. It's not a thing where we're going in and backdating. It's literally always been layered into the story line. We can literally go back and pull out moments of the show and I'm excited to do so, and point out where it was talked about. It's not going to be so hard to do."

Katherine Heigl To Return? Executive Producer Slams Rumors

The season 10 finale revealed that Margaret "Maggie" Pierce, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital's new head of cardio played by Kelly McCreary, was Meredith's half-sister. Ellis put her up for adoption without Margaret's father, Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.), knowing.

In the meantime, Meredith will also have to deal with her husband, Derek, who left for a new job in D.C. Meredith, who feels she's been put last, will change her mindset this season.

"The idea that she has set back her career to deal with the kids and let him shine is also very frustrating for her as well. She's got a chance to step forward and say, 'I'm not going to do that anymore,'" Rhimes recently told The Hollywood Reporter.

Season 11 of Grey's Anatomy premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on ABC.
