Meredith and Derek won't be in a good place when season 11 of Grey's Anatomy kicks off. But, does this mean one of TV's most beloved couples will call it quits?

Katherine Heigl To Return? Executive Producer Slams Rumors

"I don't think that it's a marriage-ending argument," executive producer Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly in a new interview. "It feels very TV for people's marriages to end over easy things or hard things. I actually would like to watch a couple have a hard time in their marriage, and have it not be that that means their marriage is over. There's something really great about watching a couple have a mature marriage where stuff goes wrong, things are hard, and people try to push through it and figure it out."

Is A New Actor Coming To Grey's Anatomy This Fall?

When the show returns in the fall, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and her husband (Patrick Dempsey) will deal with his decision to head to Washington, D.C. for a new job offer. Meredith, who feels she's been put last, will change her mindset on the upcoming season, but she won't give up on him for good.

"When we left them, they were fighting. When we come back, they're still fighting," Rhimes continued. "I like that they're having this argument. It feels like an argument that two hard-working people have who love each other and who each have powerful careers."

Season 11 of Grey's Anatomy premieres on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 8/7c on ABC.
