The new drama Constantine, based on the DC comic book series Hellblazer, comes to NBC this fall.

Producers Promise 'Old School' Take For New 'Constantine' Series

As the premiere approaches, some fans will be envisioning the series to be somewhat like the 2005 Constantine film starring Keanu Reeves. They will, therefore, remember the character of Chas as a young Shia LaBeouf. However, those who know the comic books insist that Charles Halford, who plays Chas in the NBC series, is much more in keeping with the source material.

In an interview with Nuke the Fridge on Wednesday, Halford sat down with writer Fred Topel to discuss his part on the new show.

In the Hellblazer comics, Chas Chandler is John Constantine's close friend who has the fortunate, or misfortune, of surviving over 200 books with the troubled leading man.

Chas does have some unusual origins and while Halford refused to reveal whether or not his character is immortal on the show, he did admit that Chas does get through a lot right off the bat.

"He does survive something in the pilot that anyone would probably die afterwards, so he does have some survival skills," claimed Halford, "But the root of those survival skills is yet to be determined in the coming episodes."

As for faithfulness to the comic, Halford claimed that he wasn't exactly sure what the writers had planned. "I can't say if there is or isn't [a monkey demon]" he explained, referring to Chas' introductory storyline in the comic books involving his mother, who also happens to be a witch. "I can say that I would love there to be one but I don'ts know if that will ever appear."

One thing Halford knows is that Chas will definitely be balancing out a lot of Constantine's detachment on the series. "Chas again is a very human character," said the actor. "I think he's a little but more sensitive to the loss that John creates… He kind of makes John answer for some of his decisions."

Constantine makes its television debut on NBC October 24.
