While Marvel seems to be a little behind in making a standalone film for a female hero, it seems like they could be switching gears and finally be putting a Black Widow movie in development.

Speaking with Vanity Fair last week, Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall talked about his interest in making a female superhero movie and why it interests him in particular.

"I think I'd like to do a big movie with a strong female lead, whether or not she would be a superhero. I'm more interested in characters like Scarlett Johansson in Lucy. I'm less interested in people with superpowers because I can't identify with them," Marshall said.

"Very rarely do they get killed off, and when they do get killed off, chances are they're going to be back ... somehow. Yes, I'd love to do a big splashy movie with a great female lead, but it has to be someone I can believe in."

Marshall showed a specific interest in making a Black Widow movie for Marvel and why it would be an interesting character to tackle.

"I would love to do a Black Widow movie. That's perfect, I would love to do that," Marshall said.

"That character is really interesting, she doesn't have any superpowers, she just has extraordinary skills, and the world that she comes from, being this ex-K.G.B. assassin, I find that really fascinating, yeah."

Marshall has yet to return to film directing after working on both Game of Thrones and the pilot for NBC's Constantine and Marvel is known to pick directors out of television to direct their movies. If a Black Widow movie is in development, clearly Marshall is one they could check out because of his interest and work on the HBO fantasy series.
