Mad Men may be one of AMC's biggest hits now, but this past week, creator Matthew Weiner dished on what it was like getting the show off the ground seven seasons ago.

Jon Hamm Talks About Leaving Behind A Character He 'Really Liked'

The concept of serialized television on a network like AMC, while popular today, was not so highly anticipated when Weiner was developing Mad Men. As a period drama about an ad agency filled with deeply flawed characters that carried through each episode, it was not quite a conventional series. Nonetheless, Mad Men led the way for some of the network's most popular shows and pushed AMC to the forefront of innovated television.

While Weiner is thankful for the program's success, he harkened back to the shows that influenced him growing up.

"The role that All in The FamilyMary Tyler Moore [played]," he explained, "There is no TV show that had that impact on our lives the way those did."

With only a few episodes left, Weiner is keeping those final scripts' secrets pretty guarded. Each member of the cast has been giving variations of the same code of silence during their respective interviews. As a result, many of the actor interviews have been spent looking back on the series.

Mad Men returns to AMC to complete its seventh and final season in January 2015.
