A source had claimed to the New York Daily News that Rivers received an "unplanned" biopsy from a doctor who came with her entourage.

The source reportedly said, "A biopsy like that should only be done in a hospital setting . . . If she had been in a hospital when it happened, she might have been okay."

An investigation into Rivers' death is currently underway. Spokeswoman Julie Bolcer previously told CNN that the New York medical examiner office would be "investigating the death of Joan Rivers," while spokesman James O'Hara said that the New York State Department of Health was "investigating the matter."

Rivers died at the age of 81 and is survived by her daughter Melissa Rivers, 46, and her grandson Cooper, 13.

"My mother's greatest joy in life was to make people laugh," Melissa said in a statement after her mother's death. "Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return laughing soon."
