After Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney was an apparent victim of a nude photo scandal this week, it looks like she might find herself in some serious trouble involving a possible conviction.

Mysterious Account Reportedly Trying To Sell Hacked Images Of McKayla Maroney?

Last Monday, Newsweek posted a story on the gymnast saying that the leaked images of her were reportedly taken when she was underage. This is allegedly leading to a petition asking the Obama administration to charge Maroney with production or possession of child pornography.

The site added a definition of child pornography from the U.S. Department of Justice as "any visual depiction of sexually explicit conduct involving a minor." This seems to have become an issue taken seriously where possession of this act can be a crime no matter who is responsible. This even includes an underage person in a "sexting" situation who could face felony charges.

McKayla Maroney Responds To Nude Photo Scandal

If Maroney does wind up in a criminal case, there might be a chance that she would have to register as a sex offender. But it might be too soon to go that far at this point especially since the photos of her might not even be real.

"the fake photos of me are crazy!!" Maroney wrote on her Twitter page. "was trying to rise above it all, and not give 'the creator' the time of day.. BUT.." She then added a picture of Jesus that says, "You Sir Need Jesus."

If someone else created these images of Maroney while she was under the age of 18, then there might even be a possibility that this person could face the sex offender charges.
