As if things couldn't get worse between Stefan and Caroline on The Vampire Diaries.

Alaric Returns For Season 6 & Shares 'Grief' With Elena?

Showrunner Julie Plec revealed that not only won't there be a romance between the pair next season, but the character's friendship may also be in serious trouble.

"Caroline isn't going to let Stefan off the hook very easily. In fact, his determination to move on and start a new life after the loss of his brother may ultimately ruin the friendship he's built with her over the years," Plec told E! News.

Find Out Which New Character Are Coming To The Vampire Diaries

Paul Wesley, who plays Stefan on the hit CW show, previously revealed his character's disappearance during an interview with TVFanatic.com at Comic-Con in San Diego in July.

"He takes off, he leaves town and he decides that he doesn't want to have any part," Wesley said. "We think that he's searching for Damon and Bonnie. We think that he's being proactive but in reality he's gone. He's doing his thing and he's completely disinterested, he's apathetic, he's given up."

Plec's fellow showrunner Caroline Dries also revealed that Caroline has feelings for Stefan but he doesn't reciprocate the love.

"She's going to realize it's a little more one-sided than she was hoping, and there's going to be some fallout from that," she previously told TVLine.com. "But just because one character doesn't like another character, that doesn't mean it's not a fascinating love story."

Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries premieres on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 8/7c on the CW.
