Though the lives they leave behind are much simpler than the ones they begin to experience after they leave, one of the newest Breaking Amish stars is leaving behind something even more simple than his fellow cast members.

Mathias Says The Amish Are 'Two-Faced'

The 21-year-old, who headed to Brooklyn to live an English lifestyle on the newest season of the show, was kicked out of his parents' home for rebelling against the Amish rules-and was living in a barn prior to the show as a result.

"Right now, I'm living at the loft of a barn. My parents kicked me out of the house," he said in a preview clip for the show. "They pissed me off by not letting me live my life the way I want to live my life. I actually went out partying with my friends and stuff, got drunk, and I got a Mohawk. You don't have hair like this in the Amish community."

"I guess the Mohawk was a symbol of rebellion, to prove that I was my own person and they can't control me," he continued. "They didn't really appreciate that at all and they ended up kicking me out of the house."

Adding to his rebellious nature, Bates admits to having an Ex-Amish girlfriend, which is another sign of rebellion to his family.

"I have an ex-Amish girlfriend, which we were really frowned upon, and I get a lot of crap for it, but I love her," he said. "I think because Reena chose to leave the Amish, she really knows where I'm coming from."

And while he accepts that he was born into the culture he was, Bates also says he has never felt right there, and needs to see what else the world has to offer him.

"I've always had problems with being Amish, all my life. I've never felt comfortable," he said. "I grew up with the feeling that I don't belong here. You feel restricted being Amish actually, and I always felt like there's got to be more out there. I just want to get out."

Breaking Amish season 3 premieres Thursday, September 18 at 10 p.m. on TLC.
