Kira Kazantsev's life changed on Sunday night when she became the new Miss America.

Miss New York, 23, impressed the judges when she performed Pharrell Williams' hit Happy using a cup as the percussion. (The moment was reminiscent of Anna Kendrick's audition in 2012's Pitch Perfect.)

Of course, Kazantsev was also judged on her swimsuit, evening gown and the question category. Kazantsev was asked what issue women in the U.S. Senate should fight for and she replied "sexual assault in our military."

Get to know the new Miss America a little more with the five facts below:

She was a victim of domestic violence and wants to raise awareness for it.

How did she get out of it: "Talking about it, getting help, leaning on my family, removing myself from the situation - all of these are important steps to being able to leave your aggressor," she told the Brooklyn Daily.

What will she do with her reward of $50,000 in scholarship money?

Kazantsev plans to pay for law school. She's been accepted to Fordham University Law School.

She speaks fluent Russian.

Both her parents are Russian immigrants. "I attended Russian school, Russian camp, and have always been involved with the Russian-speaking community, which in turn has allowed me to connect with the Russian-speaking culture," she told the Brooklyn Daily.

She graduated from Hofstra with a triple major.

She studied political science, global studies and geography in the Long Island, N.Y. university.

Her future career goals are major.

"To pursue a career in International Diplomacy," as noted on MissAmerica.org
