The third episode of Boardwalk Empire's final season aired on HBO Sunday night, further exploring Chalky White's broken state nearly a decade after the death of his daughter.

New Trouble Stirs In Final Episodes Of 'Boardwalk Empire'

When a young hostage told Chalky (Michael K Williams) that Jesus claimed there could be forgiveness for everyone, Chalky just shook his head. "Baby girl," he replied, "Jesus was wrong."

This line essentially sums up where Chalky is at this season. In an interview on Sunday (featured below), producer and writer Howard Korder expanded a little on Chalky's state of mind.

"For what he brought into being at the close of our last season, there is no forgiveness, there can never be," noted the writer, "His whole world fell to pieces there and that's still where he is seven years later, believing that there is no redemption for him."

In spite of past transgressions and overwhelming guilt, Chalky's story isn't over just yet. "[He believes] his is a road that's come to an end," Korder continued, "And whether that's true or not we'll see."

Chalky isn't the only one haunted by the past. Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) is also beginning to regret the decisions he's made. After meeting a man who's managed to do all that Nucky had initially wanted to accomplish, he's begun to wonder what his life has truly meant. "Joe Kennedy is the man Nucky wanted to be," explained Korder as he discussed what Nucky is looking for in Season 5.

"He does want to do something that makes all the other things okay…" added the writer, "Redeem the crimes he has committed."

Boardwalk Empire continues on HBO with its fifth and final season Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
