True Detective officially has a cast for Season 2 and while some fans are excited to see if Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn will follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, a few critics have their doubts.

Colin Farrell Confirms 'True Detective' Involvement

The women of the cast have yet to be announced, but Farrell (Minority Report, Saving Mr. Banks) and Vaughn (Wedding Crashers, Into the Wild) are both in. Neither is the conventional choice. Vaughn is primarily known for his comedic roles while True Detective Rumors has noted Farrell as an inconsistent lead to bet on. While he's certainly got the star power to draw in a crowd, a number of his recent films have been panned by critics.

The show's first season became a smash hit at the start of 2014, with rave reviews for stars Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) and Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games).

Actress Malin Akerman In Talks For New Season Of 'True Detective'

Like Vaughn and Farrell, McConaughey had been known for his varied and sometimes unfavorable resume before landing his role on the series, and so HBO could be looking to recreate some of that magic.

According to ABC News, the new installment will consist of eight episodes. Production is scheduled to take place during the fall in California, which also happens to be the setting for the program's upcoming story arc.

Creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto has admitted to at least one female lead for the new episodes, though at this time the actress has either yet to be cast or has been intentionally kept a mystery.

True Detective will return to HBO for a second season sometime in mid-2015.
