Major Crimes is famously a spin-off of The Closer and Tony Denison, who plays Lt. Flynn, is spilling on why the show is even more popular now than ever.

Denison told Hallmark's Home & Family Tuesday that Major Crimes is doing even better than the original show, in terms of ratings.

"Mary McDonnell had appeared as a recurring character and was then elevated to the female lead on the show and believe it or not, we're even doing better numbers."

Denison thinks people were curious about the spin-off and started tuning in. "There are some elements in the new show that are different than The Closer," he said. "I think that's drawing in another group."

Denison also credited creator James Duff calling him "brilliant" for doing things with McDonnell's character and making her "incredibly beloved." McDonnell's character Sharon Raydor used to be called Darth Raydor on The Closer.

Major Crimes just wrapped up its summer season in August, but will be back in November for the rest of Season 3. The show was also renewed for Season 4. When the show comes back in the fall, it will be introducing Flynn's daughter to fans. Recently Pretty Little Liars star Torrey DeVitto, who plays Melissa on the show, was cast as his daughter named Nicole. TVLine reported last week will appear in the episode called Acting Out and it's set to air on Dec. 8.

She is described by the site as "professional, endearing" and wielding "a touch of Flynn's edge and sense of humor."
