The upcoming fourth season of Showtime's Homeland is the first to not feature former main character Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) in any capacity, which is on track with where the producers wanted it to be - two years ago.

Homeland executive producer and show runner recently spoke about the departure of Brody and how it was originally supposed to happen ahead of Season 2.

"When we first pitched the series to Showtime, Howard [Gordon] and I always thought that the Brody story would last one year," Gansa said. "Brody lasted that long because he proved to be a very compelling character and [Lewis] proved to be a very compelling actor."

Quinn 'Concerned' for Carrie In Season 4 of Homeland

Gansa explained, "Our original intention for the second season was to take Carrie Mathison [Claire Danes] overseas and watch her do what she was trained to do and that's to be a case officer in a foreign country."

This is what the producers are doing now, heading into Season 4.

The upcoming season features Carrie in the Middle East as the Station Chief in Islamabad and Kabul. It will be centered on the geopolitical conflict between America and the Middle Eastern countries.

"This season is really all about the draw down of American forces in Afghanistan and what it means for South-East Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the US," Gansa revealed.

Homeland Season 4 is set to debut Sunday, Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Showtime. The series will be airing the first two episodes of the season, concluding at 11 p.m.
