With a massive cast of movie stars and award-winning darlings, there is no question that the latest from writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson will be something special come Oscar season. But with Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and Josh Brolin set to lead the film, what chances does it have to take home the big prize?

'Doctor Strange' Heading To Production Soon With 2016 Release In Mind?

Apple released the first trailer for Inherent Vice on Monday. The film stars Phoenix, Witherspoon, Brolin, and a host of other actors in the adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's novel of the same name.

The film clearly understands the vibe it is going for as it hits some parts film noir, others with post-60s fatigue, and some humor and postmodern lit thrown in for good measure. Phoenix, who was nominated for an Oscar for Anderson's The Master, looks to ride the fine line between insanity and reality with a mix of both Anderson and Pynchon infused into his performance.

Rumored 'Doctor Strange' Actor Having Second Thoughts About Joining Marvel

When P.I. Doc Sportello's (Phoenix) ex-old lady shows up with a story about her current billionaire land developer boyfriend and a plot by his wife and her boyfriend to kidnap that billionaire and throw him in a looney bin... well, easy for her to say. It's the tail end of the '60s, paranoia is running the day and Doc knows that "love" is one of those words going around, like "trip" or "groovy," that's way too overused-except this one usually leads to trouble.

The cast of characters includes surfers, hustlers, dopers and rockers, a murderous loan shark, LAPD Detectives, a tenor sax player working undercover and a mysterious entity known as the Golden Fang, which may only be a tax dodge set up by some dentists. It is part surf noir, part psychedelic romp -- all Thomas Pynchon.

The film is set to premiere at the New York Film Festival on Saturday with a limited release set for December 12. The wide release hits on January 9, 2015.
