“We are delighted to have the incredibly talented Sam Neill, an actor whose breadth of experience will bring such depth and vision to the role of Josephus,” executive producer Roma Downey said in a statement. “Sam is a wonderfully exciting choice to bring Josephus to life in this gripping story of Masada.”

The 67-year-old Peaky Blinders actor will portray the Romano-Jewish scholar, who is also quite a controversial historian. His character will be seen conducting interviews with the adult survivors of the Siege of Masada, an important event in Jewish history.

Neill joins former NCIS star Cote de Pablo, who will star as Shirah, a "sensual, mysterious and fiercely independent single mother with uncanny insights and a quiet and mysterious power," according to CBS. Other actors in the miniseries include Rachel Brosnahan, Diego Boneta and Jonas Armstrong.

The upcoming miniseries is based on Alice Hoffman's 2011 historical novel of the same name, which tells the true story of 900 Jewish people who the Romans forced to evacuate to Masada, an ancient fortification. The show will focus on four women who fight to survive.

The Dovekeepers will premiere in 2015.
