The United States and China have been trailing one another in their 2012 Olympic medal count totals. Both countries began as the leaders in medal gathering, only differing by very little. However, competitions in Track & Field will most likely mark the demise of China's threat in the Olympic medal count victory.

"...The United States will gain a serious advantage once the athletics portion of the Games get under way," Ben Chodos, a featured columnist on Bleacher Report wrote.

The Track & Field events at the Olympics begin on August 3. At the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the US racked in 7 gold medals and 23 total medals in the Track & Field division. However, China only earned 2 bronze medals.

Even at the 2011 World Championships, the US stormed the medal count with 12 gold medals and 25 total medals. China earned a few more medals than at the Olympics with 1 gold medal and 4 total medals.

According to Foxbusiness.com, the Unites States has earned a total number of 2,303 Olympic medals in the history of the games. And has been the most decorated nation 14 or of 25 times that the US has participated.

The Wall Street Journal discovered in a study that Olympic host nations earn 32% less medals in the following Olympic games.

During the 2008 Beijing Olympics, China had the most gold medals with 51, 15 more than the US. However, the United States earned the most total medals, 110, 10 more medals than China.
