John Carroll Lynch plays Twisty the Clown, one of the most terrifying characters on television on American Horror Story: Freak Show, and the actor recently discussed some of the character's motivations.

Lynch has already made his mark on American Horror Story, playing silent killer clown Twisty. While he has mostly been shown murdering innocents throughout the sleepy town of Jupiter, Fla., he is not without his reasons.

"He's most definitely not a part of the Freak Show, I will tell you that," Lynch told The Huffington Post in a new interview. "They're very important to why he's doing what he's doing. Had they chosen another town, none of this may have happened."

Asked if the freak show's entrance in town is really what caused Twisty's behavior, Lynch confirmed.

"Oh, without a doubt. Everything that's happening to Twisty is tied to the Freak Show," he said.

One of the more unexpected moments thus far in the season was Dandy (Finn Wittrock) deciding to help Twisty out with his crimes, helping to wrangle the kidnapped children in Episode 2. Lynch said that while they don't exactly have the same motivations, there is a certain level of connection between Twisty and Dandy.

"There must be something of a kindred spirit in the two of them. Certainly that's true of Dandy," Lynch said. "I think their agendas don't quite fit together. From Twisty's point of view, by the end of the episodes, he recognizes something inside of him."

As for why Twisty has been one of, if not the scariest part about this season of American Horror Story, Lynch chalked it up to "people's general fear of clowns and fear of people in masks. But I also think it's this kind of kooky discomfort around this person where you don't know what his agenda is."

American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
