Taylor Swift may be a southern girl at heart, but she can't hide her love for New York City. The singer pays homage to the Big Apple with her new song Welcome to New York.

The upbeat pop tune, which appears on Swift's upcoming fifth album 1989, was written with the help of OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder and it expresses her fascination with the big city.

"I wanted to start the album with this song because New York has been an important landscape and location for the story of my life in the last couple of years," Swift told Good Morning America on Monday. "I dreamt about moving to New York. I obsessed over moving to New York and then I did it."

The 24-year-old, who bought a house in lower Manhattan's Tribeca in April, spoke about how much the city inspires her.

"It's like an electric city and I approached moving there with such wide-eyed optimism and sort of saw it as a place of endless potential and possibilities, and you can hear that reflected in this music and in this song," she said.

Swift's 1989 will be released on Oct. 27. Fans can pre-order the album and buy the new song on iTunes.

Welcome to New York lyrics:

Walking through a crowd the village is aglow. Kaleidoscope of loud heartbeats under coats. Everybody here wanted something more. Searching for a sound we hadn't heard before and it said...

Chorus: Welcome to New York it's been waiting for you. Welcome to New York, welcome to New York, welcome to New York. It's been waiting for you. Welcome to New York, welcome to New York.

It's a new soundtrack I could dance to this beat, beat forever more. The lights are so bright but they never blind me. Welcome to New York, it's been waiting for you. Welcome to New York. Welcome to New York.

When we first dropped our bags on apartment floors. Took our broken hearts, put them in a drawer. Everybody here was someone else before and you can want who you want. Boys and boys and girls and girls...

Chorus

Like any great love, it keeps you guessing. Like any real love, it's ever changing. Like any true love, it drives you crazy. But you know you wouldn't change Anything, anything, anything...

Chorus
