American gymnast Gabrielle Douglas made headlines Thursday after she became the first African American athlete to win the all-around title.

The 16-year-old gymnast nicknamed "The Flying Squirrel" started training at age six and was a gold medalist at the 2011 World Championships with her team in Tokyo. On Thursday at the 2012 London Olympics, Douglas earned a total score of 62,232 to defeat Russia's Viktoria Komova.

Unfortunately the Olympic champion was also making headlines on Thursday after people were criticizing her for not taking care of her hair.

@MessyMeil said, "So for real though nobody wanted to go to London to do Gabby Douglas' hair?

@Kimehouse posted, "Gabby Douglas is cute and all...but that hair.......on camera."

According to Yahoo News almost all of the criticism was coming from the black American community as some claimed that Douglas didn't properly represent the black American community.

But many others are indignant at such criticisms and have turned to Twitter to show support for Douglas.
