Though Twin Peaks is returning to television after a full 25 years off the air, it will be returning on another network - one that isn't shy about what it can show onscreen.

New 'Secret Lives of Twin Peaks' 2015 Book Bridges Original Series & 2016 Return

Twin Peaks is returning to TV on Showtime, a network that does not have strict rules and regulations about language, sex, violence or nudity. Does this mean that the series will feature any of those elements for its revival?

For its time, Twin Peaks was revolutionary in terms of creating a long-term murder mystery story arc, depicting grisly violence and featuring many scenes with suggestive innuendo. The series was certainly on the cutting edge, considering it was on ABC, so it begs the question if it will go even further for its Showtime revival.

Channels with paid subscriptions, such as Showtime, HBO and Starz, are very lax when it comes to adult content like nudity and excessive swearing. Twin Peaks creators David Lynch and Mark Frost might flourish on cable if they are given free reign to show whatever they want.

Lynch's movies are almost always full of adult content, with sex and explicit language featured in such movies as Mulholland Drive, Inland Empire and, of course, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. As such, Lynch and Frost may be showing things on Showtime that would have been unheard of back in 1990, and even on network television today.

One drawback to showing nudity and including explicit language is that it might not jive well with the original series. In a series where so much was hidden and below the surface, would a more adult revival still work on the same level?

It remains to be seen if Lynch and Frost will take more liberties now that they are on Showtime, but one thing for certain is that they will both be involved throughout the entire process. They will both write every single episode with Lynch directing all of them as well.

Twin Peaks is set to return to television in 2016 on Showtime, though the cable channel has not yet announced a specific premiere date.
