New reports reveal that Peter Jackson's epic sags, The Hobbit trilogy, has cost a whopping $870 million to make.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies Could Have Different Endings?

The information has been sourced from the financial documents for the production cost of all three movies were filed in New Zealand. The Sydney Morning Herald states that such a cost sets a record.

The release of the third and final in the trilogy, The Battle of the Five Armies, is just around the corner and fans are eager to see how Jackson conclude the series.

The Hobbit Part 3 Plot To Change, Take Detour From Book And Keep Oakenshield Alive?

Jackson recently stated that the movie will be something of a "psychological thriller" also spoke about what fans can expect from the final in the epic trilogy and gave away some decent spoilers. At Comic Con on July 28, Jackson revealed that some of the main characters will die.

"It's always great when you can kill off some main characters," he said. "You have the chance to do something powerful and emotional. We do get to kill a few of them this time around."

He also said that the movie will not be as comical as the first Hobbit movie and would be closer to The Lord of the Rings.

While it seems like the plot will be sticking to the orginal Tolkien story, fans had recently petitioned to keep Thorin Oakenshield alive -- he dies in the books -- only time will tell if this will have any bearing on the film adaptation.

The biggest moment of the film will be the epic battle, with the enemy forces led by the dragon Smaug. It was recently revealed that the film will open with the sequence of Smaug wreaking havoc in Lake Town and he will be something of a "killing machine."

Another very interesting highlight witll be the retrun of Sauron. After Sauron made a daunting appearance in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug it is being suggested that the necromancer will return and fight the White Council. But it is also believed that the White Council will most probably defeat him.

As Thorin will lead his forces against the enemy he will be the man of the hour. Richard Armitage who plays the dwark king revealed that Thorin's real storyline will be crystallized in The Battle of Five Armies.

What might be a small disappointment for fans, The Battle of Five Armies is also going to be shorter than the first two in the trilogy.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies will hit theaters on December 18.
