Nearly forty years ago a young McGraw came across Elvis Presley's 68 Comeback Special and completely fell in love.

"I had an Elvis record that I played," McGraw told CMT on Wednesday. "It had my favorite Elvis song on it."

The song he was referring to was the legend singer's If I Can Dream and McGraw took to it right away.

"I played it over and over," he admitted. "It's my favorite Elvis song."

Elvis wasn't the only influence McGraw had growing up in Louisiana and a number of the country star's favorites were popular rock bands. He called the Rush's Moving Pictures from 1981 "an album that I just completely wore out" and admitted to being a big fan of Journey and other Top 40 radio artists.

While the country artist has always had an interest in music, it wasn't until college that he realized he wanted to turn music into a career. "The first time I played a club, my first year of college, I took my high school ring and pawned it and bought a guitar," the singer revealed in a July interview with CMT.

McGraw released his own latest country album Sundown Heaven Town on Sept. 16 and continues to tour this month.
