But of course she dished on what she liked most about taking on the lead role as well.

"What I enjoyed most about playing Aaliyah, was I loved all the dance moves. I loved all the hair, all the makeup. Like, 'cause I can't do it myself. And they did it. And they made me look exactly like her. For me, I would look in the mirror and be like 'That's not Alex, that's not the weirdo. That's Aaliyah.'"

She went on to say that she is stoked for viewers to see the film.

The film was hit with lots of controversy after Aaliyah's family, particularly her parents, brother and cousin, did not want the movie to be aired on Lifetime. While the network went ahead with the biopic, despite the family's attempt to legally shut it down, it did not stop Shipp from getting criticized for signing on to the controversial role - especially after Zendaya Coleman, who originally snagged the part, turned it down.
