Gina Prince-Bythewood Tells the Story of How Alicia Keys Inspired the Entire Film

The story follows the lives of two very different young people who are on a journey to make their dreams come true. Noni, the female lead played by the talented Gugu Mbatha-Raw, is a sexy singer who has reached new heights in her career by selling a fantasy to men and women. Kas, the male lead played by Hollywood hunk Nate Parker, is a good-hearted cop who has plans of becoming a major political force within his hometown.

Their paths cross when Noni comes to terms with the trajectory of her unfulfilling career and tries to take her own life. Without giving too much of the story away, they fall in love and her life is changed because of it.
