The highly anticipated Christmas special for the popular British series Sherlock is still on track to film during Spring 2015 but it might not actually air around the holidays next year.

Steven Moffat Says He Would Be Down For 'Sherlock' & 'Doctor Who' Crossover

Sherlock executive producer Mark Gatiss recently told Radio Times that shooting for the Christmas special is set for spring but it remains to be seen when it will air.

"It will be finished, of course, by the end of spring, [but] when they show it is entirely down to the schedulers," Gatiss said. "It would fit as a Christmas special but there's no guarantee of that - they used to show the Mike Yarwood [Christmas] Show in the summertime."

Without giving too much away, Gatiss said that it is "a very special special, and we're all tremendously excited about it."

The Radio Times report revealed that Gatiss will also be returning to his role as Sherlock's (Benedict Cumberbatch) brother, Mycroft. Gatiss added that considering they will be shooting soon, diehard fans will soon learn what Sherlock intends to do going forward.

"It's pretty close to shooting now," Gatiss said. "It won't be long before people see enough to get their teeth into."

Back in July it was announced that a one-off Christmas special was set to be filmed for 2015 in addition to three new episodes for Season 4, which will air in 2016. This continues the trend of Sherlock seasons debuting every two years, to accommodate for Cumberbatch and costar Martin Freeman's busy film careers.
