Showtime has released the first image from the upcoming episodes of Penny Dreadful, and the bonds forged during season 1 have only grown stronger.

Ominous Photo From The Set Of 'Penny Dreadful' Season 2 

The first official photo from season 2, released by Showtime on Friday, reveals an exhausted, tormented Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) seeking comfort from Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett). Having met in the pilot and cultivated a relationship through Vanessa's search for Sir Malcolm's (Timothy Dalton) daughter Mina, the pair form one of the show's few relationships based on complete trust and faithfulness.

Vanessa's grim look could have something to do with a photo shared from the set by producer Christopher King on Friday, which gives a glimpse of poor Mina's tombstone.

The unforgotten Mina could be the source of the some new supernatural trouble during the program's new season, or perhaps merely her final death during the season 1 finale has caused Vanessa more grief than might have been revealed at the time. The very same day King shared his photo director James Hawes posted a a little spoiler revealing that he'd been doing some "sneaky" filming on set to prepare for what's to come next.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season during the second half of 2015.
