Showtime's Penny Dreadful was rife with symbolism during season 1 and it looks like creator and writer John Logan intends to keep it up with the show's second season.

"Animals are a great metaphor for sort of the series…" noted producer Christopher Kind during an interview released by Showtime on Monday (featured below). "Animals reflect danger and can reflect fear and dominance and power."

"I think that's what's great about this show," continued King. "You see dangerous creatures, dangerous people, but you can also find them beautiful. You know, they're either frighteningly beautiful or beautifully frightening."

The interview included a behind-the-scenes look which examined a scene from episode 3 of the first season. In this scene Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) appeared to charm or speak to a pack of wolves that Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) had encountered.

The interaction between Ethan and the wolves is significant not only because it hints at Ethan's werewolf origins, later revealed in the finale, but it also speaks to his empathy. Throughout season 1, Ethan showed consistent compassion for the people, creatures and animals around him, no matter how hopeless they might have seemed.

It is likely that season 2 will aim to expand upon this aspect of his identity, maybe even exploring his past in America via flashback as the program did for Vanessa during the first season.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
