He spoke with Ebro of HOT 97 in New York and said he had no knowledge on the speculated beef.

Still, he went on to say that he will not point the blame of the negative backlash to any particular person such as Williams. But he did agree the film had lots of flaws and he regrets giving it any extra attention.

"It wasn't done right...I don't know whose fault it is. I'm going by the fans. It was the first time I paid attention to the fans. One of my close, close friends sent me this perverse picture of [the casting]. Pictures can say a lot. I thought about it and I was like, 'You know what? The more attention we give this thing, the better it is for them.'"

He added that he did not think Aaliyah's story being told on Lifetime gave the late singer any justice at all. He even confessed he thought news of the biopic was just a rumor or joke to begin with, especially with her family not being on board.

He also said that his he got countless messages and pictures from fans via Instagram the night the film aired.

"I'm very upset about it. My Instagram became all about baby girl. And she's all worth it. If it's overboard, it's overboard."
