BBC has released a few images in relation to the upcoming Sherlock Christmas special set to air in late 2015.

'Sherlock' Will 'Keep Evolving' After Character-Driven Third Season, 'Mystery' Not Enough

One photo features Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) dressed in some comically over the top garb. Sherlock sports a fetching top hat and a suit while pointing at something off in the distance while Watson wears an excellent bowler hat while sporting a healthy mustache.

This is what the dynamic duo will be wearing in the special, according to a tweet from Sherlock producer Sue Vertue, who also included a photo of the script: This is what we've been doing today. Later on a pic of #Sherlock and John as they'll appear in the Special. #221back."

'Sherlock' Showrunner Mark Gatiss Teases 'Tragedy As Well As Adventure' Ahead For Holmes & Watson

As expected the new Sherlock special is written by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, the show's creators. Moffat previously spoke about season 4 and how he and Gatiss intend to top the third season, which cleaned up at the Emmy Awards in August.

"We have a plan to top it," Moffat said, answering a reporter's question in regard to Season 4 versus Season 3. "And I do think our plan is devastating.

He added, "We've practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan ... we're probably more excited that we've ever been about Sherlock."

The Sherlock Christmas special is expected to air in Dec. 2015, with season 4 slated to begin airing in early 2016. No specific release dates have been announced yet.
