This week Showtime released the first official image from Penny Dreadful's second season, and the bond shown between Ethan Chandler and Vanessa Ives is something creator John Logan wants to explore.

According to Hitflix on Saturday, Ethan (Josh Hartnett) and Vanessa (Eva Green) will find great comfort in one another as the series continues.

"This season Vanessa and Ethan face new challenges, and old enemies," noted series creator and writer John Logan.

The writer added that the pair will "turn to each other for solace" as they move forward. At the end of season 1, Vanessa found herself mourning the loss of Mina, as well as struggling with whether or not she wanted to accept her demonically-prone nature which made her unique.

Ethan had his own challenges. Not only did the season finale reveal that he was a werewolf, fans also found out that he is being hunted in London for things he did back in America. His reasons for fleeing and that past pain are likely to explored as the program continues, particularly since Ethan was one of season 1's most mysterious characters.

"Their intimacy grows as they are forced to confront their demons together," explained Logan of Vanessa and Ethan.

With everything they've faced so far, the pair will need all the help they can get.

Penny Dreadful returns to Showtime for a second season in 2015.
