While the series finale of AMC's Mad Men has been kept under wraps this year, series creator Matthew Weiner claims that one his stars always knew how things would go down.

'Mad Men' Creator Thinks Cast Has Gone 'Unrecognized' At The Emmys

Weiner accepted the International Emmy Founders Award on Monday night, and following his acceptance speech the writer stopped to talk about the end of Mad Men with The Hollywood Reporter.

"Jon Hamm has been including in everything," revealed Weiner. "He just needs to know that he's my partner in that. I don't know if he's said he doesn't know, but he knows. He knew very early on exactly how it was gonna work and what I was planning and trying to execute."

'Mad Men' Was Almost A 'French Movie' Instead

While Weiner has accepted that the show is finally ending, it has still be an emotional experience, particularly in the editing room. The knowledge that it is finally over is something he's struggled to wrap his head around. "I sat there thinking, 'I [first] wrote this 14 years ago," explained Weiner, "And this is the last one I'm ever gonna see.'"

As for the finale itself, Weiner hinted that the episode will likely be controversial. Not everyone will be happy with the way the series comes to a close, but Weiner isn't worried about the backlash. "I don't care. I'm just doing my job," he insisted. "I'm just trying to do something meaningful with the people I work with."

Mad Men will return on AMC to finish out its seventh and final season in the spring of 2015.
